Novgorod-Siverskiy is a small town in the north of Ukraine with the population 15 000 located in Chernigiv province near Shostka. In days of the Kyivan Rus the town was a capital of Novgorod-Siverskiy princedom. The basic sights of town are Uspenskiy cathedral (1671), St. Nikolai cherch (1760), the Triumphal arch (ÕVIII century), Trading numbers and warehouses (ÕVIII century). There is the Ushinskiy`s grammar school is revived in the town; the college of its name prepares for the qualified experts in Kyiv.
The pearl of town considers a monument of old Russian architecture - Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy monastery, which was founded in XI - ÕII cent. on a height above Desna river. Now there it is organized Historical-architect memorial estate " the Word about Igor`s Shelf ".
There are permanent exhibitions devoted to "the Word...", exhibition hall on the memorial estate territiry. The study of local lore department acquaints with history of city, archeology, flora and fauna of Siverska land. Bronze monuments to "the Word..." heroes Boyan, prince Igor and its wife Yaroslavna are established to the 1000th anniversary of Novgorod-Siverskiy.
