Lutsk is a center of Volyn Region that is situated in the northwest of Ukraine. Styr River flows through the city. The population of Lutsk is above 208 000. The city occupies an area of 42 sq km. The territory of Lutsk extends 10 km from west to east and 15 km from north to south.
Scholars found Paleolithic settlement on the Styr bank. Its age is 15 thousand years. Approximately four thousand years ago tribes of line-ribbon ceramic left their signs on the territory of the city. In the 7th-8th centuries there was East Slavonic settlement situated on the island between rivers Sryr and Glushets. On the highest hill at that time fortification was built. Later it has turned into the castle, which was called Upper. The first record of Lutsk was found in the Ipatiyev Chronicle under the year of 1085.
Fans of antiquity can peep in antique shops on Lesya Ukrainka Street. During holidays, the street turns into the folk art exhibition. One can purchase Volyn artists` paintings and various souvenirs. Bogdan Khmelnytskyy Street is famous not only for its fairy like houses of the end of the XIX century but also for the monument of city`s patronizer St. Mykolay that has recently appeared near the municipal administration office.
The main tourist site of Lutsk is the Upper Castle (duke`s residence), which was founded by Lubart in 1340-1384. Also you can visit Brigitta`s Convert (1642), Jesuit Convert (1616-1639), Sharita`s Convert (XV-XVIII cent.) with a Bishop Palace, a hospital and a Latin school, the Dominican Monastery, the Jewish residental area with a Great synagogue "Little Castle" (XVII cent.), center of the Old Town with the Lutheran kirk (1906-07) and the oldest temple of Lutsk - Protection of the Virgin Church.
